Many of you might know that Addyi, a female version of Viagra, recently got FDA approval despite its side effects. While it it true that some women are experiencing what they believe to be a low libido, I invite you to question whether Addyi is really what we need to live a vibrant and healthy life in and outside the bedroom.
What we do know is that certain foods can have a similar effect on the brain and below, including boosting mood, improving hormonal balance, and increasing blood blow without the steep downsides of Addyi. I don’t know about you, but if I felt drowsy, nauseous or dizzy, the last thing I would be hankering for is a roll in the sack. Why not try a delicious food remedy instead?
My three libido food picks are:
1. LEAFY GREENS – Greens, especially Spinach, are rich in magnesium. Magnesium decreases inflammation in blood vessels which increases flow to the extremities. The direct result is more genital arousal so eat your greens!
2. CRIMINI MUSHROOMS – These mushrooms are exceptionally high in zinc, the ultimate sex mineral. We know that women with higher levels of zinc usually have a higher sex drive because of their increased production of testosterone.
3. GREEN TEA – Green tea is rich in compounds called catechins, which boost desire by promoting blood flow to your nether regions. Enjoy a large cup each day and make sure it is the real deal. I like drinking Choice Organic Green Tea.
So you may be experiencing a low libido but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a low sex drive. What appears to be one thing may actually be another. I know that the Addyi advertising campaign won’t encourage you to look beyond your libido but perhaps this is a wise course of action if you truly want to know what is going on with your own body. Perhaps your “lack of sex drive” is due to what you are eating. Perhaps you have too much stress in your life and this is leaving little room for anything other than sleep in the bedroom. Perhaps your partner isn’t a good lover and so you have been conditioned to be turned off or perhaps you just need more pleasure in your life overall.
Bottom line: Let’s get to the root cause instead of popping a pill and of course, eat more real food! Your thoughts?
